JOB SUMMARY:

Hamilton Community Schools is seeking a passionate and experienced individual who is well-versed in K-12 curriculum to join our dedicated team. In this leadership role, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the educational experience for all students by overseeing the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of our curriculum across all grade levels (Kindergarten through 12th grade).

 

As the K-12 Director of Teaching and Learning, you will work directly with the Superintendent to provide leadership, vision, and strategic direction for Hamilton Community School’s curriculum, instruction, assessment and school improvement initiatives overseeing professional development for all school principals and teachers. You are the key individual responsible for implementing both short-term and long-term district improvement plans, policies and programs for curriculum and instruction with the goal to continuously improve student outcomes as it relates to K-12 instruction. This individual coordinates, defines and communicates integrated plans for the growth and development in all K-12 educational environments.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of five years of successful experience in curriculum development and implementation, preferably in a K-12 setting.
  • Deep experience in the design, integration, implementation and management of a school including knowledge of curriculum, instructional practices, school operations and management, and leadership development.
  • Strong understanding of Michigan State Standards and curriculum frameworks.
  • Proven ability to lead and collaborate effectively with a diverse group of stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage several programs concurrently.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in educational technology and data analysis tools.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:

The following are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by a person in this position. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all duties that may be performed by such a person.

  • Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of the K-12 curriculum, ensuring alignment with Michigan State Standards and best practices.
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and other stakeholders to identify curriculum needs, develop and refine instructional materials, and implement professional development opportunities.
  • Oversee curriculum development teams and committees at all grade levels.
  • Analyze student achievement data to identify areas of strength and weakness, and use this data to inform curriculum decisions and interventions.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with state and federal curriculum mandates.
  • Stay abreast of current curriculum trends and best practices, and recommend innovative approaches to enhance student learning.
  • Perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills to meet changing job conditions.
  • Develop and manage the curriculum budget.
  • Represent the district on curriculum-related matters at meetings and conferences.
  • Perform all duties in compliance with policies established by the Hamilton Community School Board.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.

 Leadership:

  • Provide scalable instructional program leadership to all school principals with specific responsibility for planning, development, implementation, assessment and improvement across all current and future schools. 
  • Title I Director: Oversee all aspects of Title I and ensure funds and resources are allocated and maintained correctly.  
  • Assist in developing systems and leading principals and school teams in School Improvement efforts and state and Federal Grants.
  • Strong leadership abilities including an encouraging, motivating presence to help with conflict management, team building, mentoring and coaching, goal-setting, prioritization and strategic planning.
  • Coordinate strategies with building principals to achieve desired district results in areas of student retention, graduation rates, and satisfactory student progress.
  • Monitor, provide feedback to and assist in the evaluation of school principals as the instructional leaders in their buildings providing clarity of roles, functions, goals and accountability. 
  • Coordinate professional development efforts at the district level to ensure systemic implementation and K-12 support.
  • Provide supervision of department and leadership in facilitating district-wide multidisciplinary academic programs. Support leadership at schools to ensure high-quality implementation of the schools’ educational design, including standards, assessments, instructional guidelines, and the school culture.
  • Facilitate collaboration among school principals and teachers.
  • Collaborate, develop and nurture partnerships with the Ottawa ISD, and public and private sector community agencies.
  • Collaborate, develop and nurture partnerships including universities, the legislature, the K-12 community, and the Department of Education.  

 

Academics:

  • Determine and implement the District’s academic priorities. Review assessment tools on a regular and ongoing basis. Analyze and share data related to student academic achievement, district school improvement planning and reporting. 
  • Work in the areas of policy development, articulation, online education, curriculum review, academic calendars, student admissions requirements, scholarships, accreditation, academic and accountability reporting, and any other academic issue. 
  • Assist school principals in monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of programs as well as identifying and acquiring appropriate program resources to ensure that curricula are student-focused and aligned with the District’s missions, core values, academic standards, and strategic goals.
  • Assure that curricula are aligned to national and state standards and help create curricula that allow for efficient and effective pacing, sequencing and lesson planning.
  • Regularly observe and evaluate student work through classroom walkthroughs and observations. Assist with teacher evaluation process planning, especially as related to instructional practices, alignment of curriculum and student achievement.
  • Respond to requests for consultation on academic initiatives/district strategic planning; provide information; conduct or oversee studies, analyze findings, and write reports.
  • Provide input in the management of instructional staff to include, but not limited to: recruitment and selection, performance reviews, etc.
  • Collaborate with school principals on hiring of all intervention and educational staff when appropriate.
  • Participate in conferences, community outreach and legislative community to help establish HCS as a community partner and stay current with relevant developments.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
